Letter: I am stepping down from the District 65 school board

Evanston RoundTable

Dear District 65 community,

On Tuesday, November 4th, I will be stepping down from my role on the District 65 Board of Education. This has been one of the toughest decisions I've ever faced, but I believe it is the best choice for my family and our community, both of which I deeply care about.

My family has a unique opportunity that requires us to leave Evanston for several months. Initially, I planned to continue serving remotely; however, after careful thought, I realized this would not be fair to the board or the community. This position demands full presence and engagement, which I cannot provide from a distance.

Reflections on service

Serving on the board has been an incredible honor. I have valued the chance to engage with our community, connect with passionate and thoughtful people, and participate in meaningful discussions about the future of our schools. These experiences have been the most rewarding part of my time on the board.

At times, I felt frustrated by my limited ability to enact more tangible changes over the past two and a half years. Nonetheless, I am proud of my dedication—to our students, staff, and the principles I uphold.

“I hope I’ve helped set a high bar for board member engagement, especially in listening to stakeholders and learning deeply about the many schools and programs in our district.”

Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

Author’s summary: The board member is resigning to support family obligations, reflecting on meaningful community service and striving to maintain dedicated engagement with education stakeholders.
