Veteran center David Kampf, who spent the entire summer on the trade block, remains within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. Despite efforts, General Manager Brad Treliving has not yet found a trade partner.
The 30-year-old forward began the season with the Toronto Marlies, the club’s AHL affiliate. However, according to insider Elliotte Friedman, Kampf has taken a short leave of absence for “a couple of days” to reflect on his future and consider his next steps.
“David Kampf has taken a couple of days to kind of think about his future. Obviously, he’s not playing with the Maple Leafs right now. He’s in a bit of a roster and salary cap crunch situation, and he got a little bit frustrated. I think everybody understands, he wants to play in the NHL and he’s an NHL player.”
Kampf did not travel with the Marlies to Chicago on Saturday night. His current contract carries a $2.4 million cap hit for two more years, and so far, there are no teams willing to absorb that deal.
Last season, Kampf appeared in 59 NHL games with Toronto, registering 13 points and a minus-1 rating while playing primarily on the fourth line. He participated in only one playoff game. So far this year, he has played four matches for the Marlies, posting one assist and a minus-1 rating.
David Kampf remains with the Maple Leafs organization but has paused AHL play amid frustration over his role and uncertain NHL future.
