John Belushi’s Legacy in Comedy and Music
John Belushi, a celebrated comedian and musician, gained fame as one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live in 1975. Together with his co-star Dan Aykroyd, he created the iconic characters “Joliet” Jake Blues and Elwood Blues, who would become the foundation of The Blues Brothers act—a blend of comedy and rhythm & blues performance.
The Blues Brothers made their live debut as musical guests on SNL in April 1978. Soon after, they formed a full touring band and opened for comedian Steve Martin during his September 1978 residency at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles.
