Former world cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith is scheduled for a comeback in February after opting out of a fight with Roman Fress (23-1, 13 KOs).
With 200-pound champion Gilberto Ramirez sidelined due to injury, the WBO had ordered Billam-Smith and Fress, the top two contenders, to compete for the interim title. The first purse bid was voided as no offers were made. However, SES Promotions later committed $156,921.
Billam-Smith (21-2, 13 KOs), who was set to earn 60% of the purse ($94,152.60), declined the fight. His trainer, Shane McGuigan, shared plans for a February return and emphasized aiming for a high-profile opponent.
“We’re looking at February now for Chris. Like all fighters, everybody is impatient and wants to get out before the end of the year because they want to enjoy their Christmas, but he will have to wait a little bit longer. It has been a frustrating time.”
McGuigan highlighted the situation's frustration but remains focused on arranging a significant matchup that will enhance Billam-Smith's career prospects.
Author’s summary: Chris Billam-Smith plans to return to the ring in February, prioritizing a major opponent over an interim title fight that was declined due to unsatisfactory circumstances.
